  5. Publications:
74 research articles, mostly in top journals; 3 research monographs: 2 in Birkhauser’s Progress in Mathematics series and 1 in the Springer Lecture Notes in Maths.; 1 text book, first published in Spanish in Mexico and then translated into English and published by Birkhauser. 11 books published as a co-editor in top international series; this includes the first of a 5-volume project to be published by Springer Verlag entitled “Handbook on Geometry and topology of singularities”.

  6. Synergistic Activities:
Organizing conferences and meetings: I have co-organized more than 70 international meetings in Mexico and elsewhere. This includes the 2nd Latin American Congress of Mathematicians, in which I coordinated the organizing, financial and scientific committees. I also was co-director of two Advanced Schools and Workshops at the ICTP, Trieste, Italy, in 2010 and 2015. I initiated in 2001 UMALCA’s program of EMALCA schools that now takes place regularly in several countries in Latin America.

    Advising Students: I have advised 22 successful students, half of them at B. A. and M. Sc. Levels, and 11 Ph. D. students, 3 of them from Brazil: F. Sánchez-Bringas 1988 (co-advisor X. Gómez-Mont), J. P. Navarrete 2006; A. Cano 2008; M. F. Zanchetta (co-advisor M. Saia, Brasil) 2010; H. Aguilar (co-advisor A. Pichon) 2011; B. Limón 2011; A. Menegón 2012; R. Martins (co-advisor N. de Goes, Brasil), 2018; A. Gonzalez 2018 (co-advisor A. Cano); A. Ucán-Puc 2019 (co-advisor A. Cano); V. Alderete 2020 (co-advisor C. Cabrera). I have also advice 10 posdoct students.

Activities as President of the Mexican Mathematics Society (1986-1988): I began the Mexican Mathematics Olympiades in 1987; this was taken as model to start olympiades in Mexico in several other disciplines. I also participated in initiating the publication series “Aportaciones Matemáticas” which is today’s most active maths publication in Mexico.

Activities in UNAM’s Institute of Mathematics: Academic leader in the areas of singularity theory and holomorphic dynamics. Consolidation of the foreign branches of the institute at the cities of Cuernavaca, Oaxaca and Querétaro (Juriquilla). Long-range scientific planning, gathering of support for the mathematical sciences, mentoring postdocs, planning outreach and mathematical education activities, mathematics circles, outreach activities in various parts of the country. Fostering programs for propagation of science in various parts of the country.

Activities in Casa Matemática Oaxaca: Gathering funds for 26 workshops a year, since 2016, organized with BIRS, and overlooking the organization of these. Fostering the regional program PROFE, which stands for Oaxacan Program for Strengthening Education, with various types of trainings and activities at the state of Oaxaca, in Southern Mexico.

Activities in CNRS’ Solomon Lefschetz International Research Laboratory: Gathering funds for, and fostering cooperation between mathematicians in France and Mexico, with emphasis on young researchers and Ph. D. students.
